September 14-18
Hi Everyone,
Here are some highlights from the week.
In math, we continued focusing on skip counting and identifying patterns made when skip counting within the hundreds chart. The week culminated in an activity where students through a ball to others in a circle, which involved skip counting, skipping over others and counting up. You can practice with your child by skip counting by 3 and 4 all the way until 60. If you search up ‘toy theatre interactive hundreds chart’ on Google, you will find a terrific visual resource that allows you to see the patterns within the chart.
Within English Language Arts, we discussed the importance of planning before writing. As a class we came up with a bunch of ideas for the prompt: how could I plan a party if I had an infinite budget? Students came up with a bunch of ideas for food, games, rides and events, which allowed them to focus on coming up with full-length sentences to communicate their ideas. We also continued reading Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, and students had to use their comprehension skills and creativity to create a golden ticket based on the information that was featured within the book.
This week we also started Science and Social Studies, in which we combine our class with Ms. Bossenberry’s class. Ms. Bossenberry is leading Science and I am leading Social Studies. In Science, students started the Earth Systems unit, and this week’s lessons centralized around the activities students do on the land, special places they have been to, and ways to care for the land. In Social Studies, we discussed collaboration and exploring differences in a simulation on the playground, which will eventually lead into learning more about treaties. We also started preparing for our Orange Shirt Day Assembly, which will be on September 29th, in which our class and Ms. Bosenberry’s class will be reenacting the story of Phyllis’s Orange Shirt. Students will either have a speaking, acting or chorus role.
In our PE/Gym class with students, students got to learn more about the importance of conserving energy for longer runs (they did two laps of the field-about 350-500 metres) and going almost all out in relay races (about 20-25 metres). Students determined whether they felt more tired after the long or shorter distances. We are doing very well with our fundraising for the Terry Fox Foundation! If you haven’t already, potentially see if your child can complete a chore in exchange for a toonie they can donate 🙂. The grand total will be shared in next week’s blog! Lastly, ask your students about their artistic creation they created for International Dot Day as well as the fun drama games we played in Buddies; we continued our ‘Yes, Let’s’ and played the ABC Name Game.
Have a great weekend and I look forward to seeing you at the Open House next Thursday!
