September 21-24

Hi Everyone, It was very nice meeting some of you at the Open House yesterday! If you were not able to make it, feel free to send me an email to schedule a few minutes to come meet me and have a tour of the classroom from your child (right after the bell). Here are some highlights from the week! We crushed our Terry Fox goal! Our class goal, aligning with the school's goal of $2 per person, (22 students + me) was $46 and we reached exactly $179 , nearly quadrupling our goal! It was very exciting tracking the money, and are excited to see what McKenzie Towne School's grand total is. Additionally, we calculated that our class did 167 laps of the 400 metre-loop for a total of more than 66km ran as a class in 30 minutes! Well done everyone! We also spent a lot of time discussing Terry Fox's legacy and the success of The Terry Fox Foundation as a charity. Many students were interested in the origin of the white post that was inserted along the route in Thunder Bay, where Terry...

September 14-18

Hi Everyone, Here are some highlights from the week .  In math, we continued focusing on skip counting and identifying patterns made when skip counting within the hundreds chart. The week culminated in an activity where students through a ball to others in a circle, which involved skip counting, skipping over others and counting up. You can practice with your child by skip counting by 3 and 4 all the way until 60. If you search up ‘toy theatre interactive hundreds chart’ on Google, you will find a terrific visual resource that allows you to see the patterns within the chart. Within English Language Arts, we discussed the importance of planning before writing . As a class we came up with a bunch of ideas for the prompt: how could I plan a party if I had an infinite budget? Students came up with a bunch of ideas for food, games, rides and events, which allowed them to focus on coming up with full-length sentences to communicate their ideas. We also continued reading Charlie and Th...

September 7-11

Hi Everyone, I hope you all had a nice week and all have a terrific weekend! Here are some highlights from the week .  This week most students were able to finish up their Super Shoe and Cupcake projects, which will be hung up shortly to personalize and decorate the classroom. Within math, we started our Skip Counting unit, which is an important skill for our upcoming Multiplication unit. During whole-group instruction, students worked on coming up with the missing values that come before and after a specific value. For example, a question might be: You are counting forward and say the number 48. Which numbers would come before and after 48 to complete the pattern? In this case, answers will vary such as ‘46 and 50,’ or ‘47 and 49’ but could even be ‘36 and 60’ or ‘30 and 96.’ We also touched upon using a hundreds chart to practice finding the difference from one number to another. If you have extra time, feel free to practice these skills. For the first question, any number can b...

August-31st-September 4th

Hello Everyone, It was very nice briefly meeting some of you on the first day of school! A little bit more about me is that I recently graduated from Mount Royal University’s Education program in April and taught Elementary Physical Education from May and June! In my spare time, I enjoy exercising, playing golf, pickleball, following professional basketball and golf and also reading and spending time with friends and family. One of the highlights of my summer was going to Las Vegas for a few days with my cousins where I got to ride a helicopter and an ATV! As a teacher, I value the opportunity to positively shape the learning experience through a student-centred approach. I emphasize hands-on learning and making curriculum content relevant to students’ lives and interests, while using a variety of assessment tools to support diverse learning styles and needs. I strive to foster a respectful and honest classroom environment, build meaningful relationships, and encourage students to deve...
