September 21-24

Hi Everyone,

It was very nice meeting some of you at the Open House yesterday! If you were not able to make it, feel free to send me an email to schedule a few minutes to come meet me and have a tour of the classroom from your child (right after the bell).

Here are some highlights from the week!

We crushed our Terry Fox goal! Our class goal, aligning with the school's goal of $2 per person, (22 students + me) was $46 and we reached exactly $179, nearly quadrupling our goal! It was very exciting tracking the money, and are excited to see what McKenzie Towne School's grand total is. Additionally, we calculated that our class did 167 laps of the 400 metre-loop for a total of more than 66km ran as a class in 30 minutes! Well done everyone! We also spent a lot of time discussing Terry Fox's legacy and the success of The Terry Fox Foundation as a charity. Many students were interested in the origin of the white post that was inserted along the route in Thunder Bay, where Terry Fox stopped running. Students took part in an art project where they inserted a silhouette of Terry running onto a landscape background they created with chalk pastels. On the bottom, they included their favourite fact they learned about Terry.

We spent a large portion of the week rehearsing for the Orange Shirt Day Assembly this coming Tuesday (September 29). Our class is joining Ms. Bossenberry's class to reenact Phyllis' Orange Shirt, and your child will either be in the chorus, reading or acting! Additionally, they have been practicing "The Children's Blessing Song" in music and in class, which everyone in grade three will sing. Hopefully I will see some of you there!

In math, we continued focusing on skip counting and identifying patterns made when skip counting within the hundreds chart. You can practice with your child by skip counting by 3 and 4 all the way until 90, and work towards knowing the numbers by heart. Once that skill is mastered, progress to counting by 5s, 6s, 7s, 8s, and 9s. If you search up ‘toy theatre interactive hundreds chart’ on Google, you will find a terrific visual resource that allows you to see the patterns within the chart.

Within English Language Arts, we continued reading Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, where we paused the story to make predictions and focus on vocabulary. If you are reading with your child, I encourage you to pause on some words that you are not 100% sure what the meaning is. Then, have your child take an educated guess and then look it up! This practice is a great way to build their vocabulary.

In Science, students continued working on their activity log where they wrote/drew about what they do on the land, special places they have been to, and ways to care for the land. Additionally, ask your children about Blob/Disease Tag (the game we played in our Tuesday PE class).

Coming up next week, we may go for a walk Thursday afternoon, linking it with Social Studies outcomes from the curriculum.

Lastly, viewpoints were sent out this week, either by the school (if your child has an IPP, as it is slightly different) or by me. If I sent one home with you, you can send it back with your child and they can bring it to me. Viewpoints give me a terrific opportunity to learn more about your child so we I can better personally support them😀

Have a great weekend!
