October 6-9

Hi Everyone,

It's to think that we are more than a quarter of the way to reach 100 days of school (we have had 27 days)! It was another great week of school.

Here are some other highlights from the week!

In math, we wrapped up our skip-counting unit. As a class, we collectively skip-counted by 3s, 4s and 6s with everyone contributing by saying a number when their name was drawn, while referring to the hundreds chart. This will be something that we will come back to, so if you have time, continue practicing with your child by skip counting by 3 and 4 all the way until 90, and work towards knowing the numbers by heart. Once that skill is mastered, progress to counting by 5s, 6s, 7s, 8s, and 9s. We then started our place value unit, where we looked at the difference visually between 1, 10, 100, 1000 and 10000.

Within English Language Arts, students worked on writing down, and summarizing the key events from a video of a cartoon story with a man, bird and dog. Students went through the process of taking notes while watching the video, and then taking the notes that best captured the main points of the story and putting them into full sentences. Ask them if they can orally tell you the story! They then read it over with a partner and will work on correcting their spelling, and other punctuation. Additionally, this week we continued reading Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, and students continued to write key details from one of the chapters in their own words

In Science, students learned about the way in which landforms can change with a special focus on how floods, wildfires and tornadoes can affect the landscape. In Social Studies, we focused on conflict resolution and learned about the history of Treaty 7. Additionally, ask your children about the Hula Hoop Beanbag Challenge, the game we played in our class PE Class that incorporated the overhand throwing skills they learned from Mr. Van Sluys.

Looking ahead to next week, we may go for a walk Thursday afternoon, linking it with Social Studies outcomes from the curriculum.

Have a great long weekend and happy Thanksgiving!
